I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely

This video is about 10 months old and it just haunts me. It’s simple and so heart-breaking too… just watch it. I promise the 4 minutes are worth it.

We’re alive to make Connections. With everyone. With everything. That is the purpose of our finite life. Be engaged. There’s so much I could say about this. About how I actually too met my husband when we crossed paths like that too, in a second. About how Running helps me to stay engaged, to have emotions, to share them with whoever is around, or to just be bored and have the randomest thoughts. About how when I moved to the US I realized I couldn’t share my life with my family and friends anymore but barely keep them informed. About how happy I was when two weeks ago we booked a trip where we won’t have phone service.

What does it make you feel? How do you feel it applies to you? Would you change anything?

I don’t do new years’ resolutions, but I am really going to try to look up and engage a lot more. Every single day. I am just going to walk home after work today. No headphones.

  1. This is one of the reasons I started boycotting (sort of) Facebook!!!
Aside from the great points you mention about not noticing other people and engaging with them… a lot of self-awareness is lost when you’re constantly listening to/watching something. Solitude is a great time to ponder, process, plan, and make conscious decisions. Thinking, reading, and writing will make you aware of your thought processes and emotions, rather than having your stream of consciousness stuffed with nonstop noise.
My husband’s younger brother is an example of this… he cannot be without some form of media, music, or electronic activity going on in his face. When he comes to family gatherings, he sits in front of the TV, or when he can’t be around a TV (like at the dinner table) he plays video games nonstop on his phone. He’s 27, out of touch with reality, uncomfortable with his (or anyone else’s) emotions, and his finances, relationships and ambitions are in shambles. I believe a lot of it is because he never contemplates life and his future, never lets himself feel anything, and never stops to freaking THINK!

  2. That was the first time I saw that video – thanks! My favorite part is 1:55-2:22 (he mentions trainers in that part 🙂 ). I was going to share on Facebook….then changed my mind 🙂
