Guess my Finish at the 2014 Boston Marathon and win a prize

Just like we did before every single race I’ve done in the last two years (link to last one, and the NYC Half guess) it’s time to place your bets again… There is always someone who hits it right in the head! (always unbelievable! look at this one: guesses here, winner here)

Rules:

Pick a finish time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! All guesses have to be in this post. Make sure if you include seconds in there too, and post before next Sunday at 7 pm EST.

As usual, there’s gonna be PRIZES… you can pick from:

  • a biomechanics session (in NYC)
  • a clip-on running metronome
  • a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
  • a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
  • a Garmin FR70 watch
  • SLS3 Compression race sleeves, white, S/M
  • Craft Compression socks, white, M
  • Zensah Compression socks, black M
  • Injinji socks, Lightweight ultra thin performance, mini crew, gray, M
  • TCKSports socks, Topo and Talus, grayishs, size M

Ok, the data…

Recent:

NYC Half, 13.1, March 2014, in 1:50:10, average pace: 8:25

Scotland 10K, April 2014, in 47:41, average pace of 7:42

Marathons:

My PR is from Berlin 2012: 3:27:44, the last marathon I did was NYCM 2013 in 3:49:34. My last Boston was in 2010: 3:51: 21

Running Calculators!

  • Mc Millan says… Based on the 1:50:10 half: 3:51 – 8:51 pace. Based on the Scotland 10k: 3:43 – 8:32 pace
  • RunnersWorld says… based on the 1:50:10 half: 3:49 – 8:44 – . Based on the Scotland 10k: 3:39 – 8:22 pace

My guess:

I am sure I won’t PR, get that out of your heads!! Goal A is to stay under 4 hours (never gone over 4 hours and don’t want to start now!) or, Goal B, break the course PR (3:51). I would love to shoot for 3:50 but I did 3:49 in NYCM and I was better trained there. I am just hoping I can stay within 4: anything between 3:50 and 3:59 is more realistic if the weather cooperates!

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! Good luck to us!!

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can have me send it to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted here (not on facebook, not on runnersworld.com, HERE) before Sunday 7 pm EST.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

Guess my Finish at the Scotland 10K, and WIN a prize!

Just like we did before every single race I’ve done in the last two years (link to last one, the NYC Half guess) it’s time to place your bets again… There is always someone who hits it right in the head! (always unbelievable! look the one I did a few weeks ago! guesses here, winner here)

Ok, the data…

Recent:

NYC Half, 13.1, March 2014, in 1:50:10, average pace: 8:25

10ks, not so recent

Mini 10K, June 2013, in 44:46, average pace of 7:13

Bronx Commnunity College, May 2013, in 44:32, average pace of 7:11

Running Calculators!

  • Mc Millan says… based on the 1:50:10 half: 49:25 – 7:57 pace
  • RunnersWorld says… based on the 1:50:10 half: 49:56 – 8:03

My guess:

I am sure I won’t PR, get that out of your heads!! I would love to do sub 8 pace, so I’d be happy with that! So that would be close to what Mc Millan predicts, I think I’ll be between 49 and 50 minutes… if all goes well!

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can have me send it to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted here (not on facebook, not on runnersworld.com, HERE) before Saturday 7 am.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

Who Will Win a Prize??? Guess my Finish Time at the NYC Half next Sunday!

Just like I did for pretty much every race in the last 18 months, it’s time to place your bets again… I love how there is always someone who nails it right in the head!

Rules: pick a time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! Make sure if you include seconds in there too, and post before next Sunday, March 16th.
Prizes… you can pick from:
– a biomechanics session (in NYC)
– a clip-on running metronome
– a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
– a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
– a pack of travel bodiglide
Ok, the DATA

My Half PR:
– NYC Half, March, 2013: 1:37:35 Pace: 7:27
Last Halfs/Marathons:
– Brooklyn Half Marathon: May, 2013: 1:38:29
– Grete’s Gallop, October 2013: 1:44:33
– New York City Marathon, November 2013: 3:49:33

My guess: I am sure I will NOT PR. Not only I am not in good shape, but since I stopped running for most of July and August last year (because of an ulcer) I really haven’t gotten back on track. The Marathon was super slow and the winter weather laziness slowed me down a lot more. I haven’t done a run over 14 miles since, not more than 50 miles a month, and 10 milers pace is around 9:30. I am guessing around 1:50.

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can pick it up when you’re in NYC if you are abroad! Or have me send to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted before Saturday 9 pm, EST.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

NYRR’s Ted Corbitt 15K – Winter Wonderland!

I promise it gets fun towards the end..

Well, I am not going to get anyone riled about this one. If something, this is a testament that I can sometimes control my pace… I was NOT racing, I barely showed up to get my last NYC marathon qualifier in and I had one hundred other things I had preferred to be doing. Actually, snow was in the forecast so I spent most of the day before and the night checking to see if they would make it a fun run (you get credit towards the marathon but you don’t even have to show up!) but they didn’t. I was exhausted. I had just come back from Buenos Aires two days before and my husband was super sick with a bronchitis (fever, coughing, the works) so there was no sleep and I really didn’t want to leave him alone at all. I was going to be back in less than two hours and it was early, and the start was less than a mile from the apartment so I knew he’d be okay, but he had a horrible night and neither of us slept. I got up to this:

ted corbitt 15K nyrr

Oy.

It was not supermotivating. Because, mostly, I am in really crappy shape. I haven’t trained in months. I was tired. I had overeaten in my Buenos Aires vacation until I food-poisoned myself… I was coming off a rough week. Plus, coming back from the nice early summer runs in 70 degrees to this frigid cold… I really didn’t want to go!!!!!

But, alas. I HAD to. I really had no choice.

My plan was to get there as close to the start time as possible so I wouldn’t freeze waiting around, not check a bag, run as easy as I could without freezing, and run straight home after I finished. Does that sound like a race strategy? No, I know. But it’s because I wasn’t racing. I was just completing the course and going home without even stopping. Lame, but it’s all I had.

So far from last year’s NYRR’s Ted Corbitt Classic 15K!!! I had a fantastic race, did a 7:27 average and loved the distance… this time, I would be happy to keep it smart and finish without dying or slowing down (ha, like my last race, the NYC Marathon!)

My race, time, and pacing was quite uneventful, as we could all expect, see some veeery conservative (though NOT dying at the end) pace here:

ted corbitt 15K nyrr 3

Nothing to write home about… 11 minutes slower than last year and I barely cracked any effort zone… 8:37 average pace (1:20:10 official finish time) in 9 miles is not even a tempo…!

But… WOW.

It started snowing AS soon as we got moving. I am not kidding. It was freezing cold, we were all shivering and dreading it. Then as soon as the horn blew, SNOW showers… Em, gladly I was covered up like a maniac and I had clear sunglasses to protect my vision (I’ve fallen with clear weather, so why make it riskier?) so I was prepped for it! It was gorgeous. I am not sure I would have loved it if I was racing. People were slipping left and right and I saw a lot of people struggling to see, the snow was coming from everywhere!!! But… it was gorgeous! I don’t have many pictures as I left the hubs locked in, but there’s a few amazing pictures in the NYRR race gallery. I felt awful for the volunteers and spectators, I am sure they were frozen. But 9 miles are over soon and in a bit, with two loops the park, I crossed the finish and kept going home, covered in snow and ice, and ready for a hot chocolate. What a race to cap off the year. Winter is here.

Guess my Finish Time at the 2013 New York City Marathon, and WIN a prize!

Just like we did before my last marathon and half marathon, it’s time to place your bets again… There is always someone who hits it right in the head! (always unbelievable! look the one I did three weeks ago! guesses here, winner here)

Rules: pick a finish time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! All guesses have to be in this post. Make sure if you include seconds in there too (like so: 3:11:22, ha), and post before next Saturday at 9 pm EST.

As usual, there’s gonna be PRIZES… you can pick from:

  • a biomechanics session (in NYC)
  • a clip-on running metronome
  • a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
  • a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
  • a Garmin FR70 watch
  • SLS3 Compression race sleeves, white, S/M
  • Craft Compression socks, white, M
  • Zensah Compression socks, black M
  • Injinji socks, Lightweight ultra thin performance, mini crew, gray, M
  • TCKSports socks, Topo and Talus, grayishs, size M

Ok, the data…

Last Marathons:

  • Berlin, September 2012, 3:27:44.
  • National Marathon, March 2011: 3:37:53.
  • Before that, most marathons I did were 3:42, 3:45, 3:45, 3:51 (my first one).

I haven’t done a marathon since September last year, so all I have is one race, a half marathon early October, where I did 1:43:33.

Running Calculators!

My guess: I am sure I will NOT PR. Not only I am not in good shape, but I stopped running for most of July and August because of an ulcer. Then I fell and that killed my only long run this year (since last year’s Berlin marathon, I haven’t run over 14 miles once!!). I tried to do some more running, and now I have some weird muscle thing I haven’t figured out yet… I am not even sure I can run it but I will definitely try! If I make it to the start I’d like to get a course PR, which would be sub 3:42:33. That’d be my goal.

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can pick it up when you’re in NYC if you are abroad! Or have me send it to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted here (not on facebook, not on runnersworld.com, HERE) before Saturday 8 pm.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

Who Will Win a Prize??? Guess my Finish Time at the Grete’s Gallop 13.1 this Sunday!

Just like we did before my last marathon and half marathon, it’s time to place your bets again… Some of you like to get really close, just seconds away! I think this time will be super close.

Rules: pick a time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! Make sure if you include seconds in there too, and post before next Saturday 7 am. There’s gonna be prizes… you can pick from:
– a biomechanics session (in NYC)
– a clip-on running metronome
– a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
– a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
– Knuckle lights
Ok, the data…

My Half PR: NYC Half, March: 1:37:35 Pace: 7:27
Last Half: Brooklyn Half Marathon: May: 1:38:29

My guess: I am sure I will NOT PR. Not only I am not in good shape, but I stopped running for most of July and August because of an ulcer. I started running regularly 2 weeks ago and did 16 hilly miles last Saturday very slowly. I haven’t done any speed since July. Now that I can run, I am focusing on long and endurance and not on my speed. After all, the marathon is 32 days away!

Also, the Grete’s Great Gallop is not the fastest half: TWO loops of Central Park. enough said. 😉

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can pick it up when you’re in NYC if you are abroad! Or have me send to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted before Sunday 9 am, EST.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

Moving on from my RW blog after over 4 years: NOT EASY

Remember this post I put up a few weeks ago about Letting Go? Well, it was not about this, but I seem to have issues with that stuff (letting go issues, commitment issues, not wanting to eat healthy issues, etc, etc, but who is counting?). It’s not easy. I made so many friends there. Met amazing people. FOUR YEARS. Not not easy at all. But it’s time and everyone who knows me understands (reason is here, in a post I just put up in RW!).

Well, I made the decision on Monday around 6 pm and by midnight it was pretty much done. I hadn’t used wordpress before (I know, I am ancient!) but it was super easy to figure out! So, if you’re thinking about doing the same thing, don’t be scared, go for it! Plus, I can help.
I still need to add a few more things, and clean it up, and create a section for my biomechanics tips I always liked sharing on my other site, but it will nicer + better with time, I promise. This is just two nights of work, so send in your feedback, questions, comments, grunts, whatever. I am here now!

Who Will Win? Guess my Finish Time in the NYC Half this weekend!

Just like we did before my last marathon, it’s time to place your bet again… Some of you were really close last time:Fivestarks was just 4 seconds away and got crowned!

Rules: whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! Make sure if you include seconds in there too, and post before next Sunday. I promise I will get something for the Winner!
Ok, the data…
My Half PR: Staten Island Half, September, 2010: 1:42:47. Pace: 7:50
Same race last year: NYC Half, 2012; 1:43:04: Pace 7:52
Second half of Berlin: 1:41:49. Pace: 7:46
Berlin Marathon, total: 3:27:44. Pace: 7:55
December: 15K (9.3 miles) at 7:23
January: 5 miler at 7:13 (not a PR, PR is 7:08)
That’s all I have… no races since then.
This might help. it’s what I am working with…
1:38, pace: 7:29
1:39, pace: 7:33
1:40, pace: 7:38
1:41, pace: 7:43
As you know from my post last week, I am quite confident I am going to PR. But… by how much. It’d also be quite a safe bet to go over my PR 😉 and I declared openly my goal is to go sub 1:40…
GO ON! Place your bets!!! I might only read fivestarks’ comment before the race though… 🙂

And… some major news!

Some of you might already have seen it in FB, but it’s time to share with all + ellaborate..!

After 18 months at Team in Training, I am moving on (can you believe how time flies?).

It was truly an experience. I made a lot of new friends, managed all sorts of different seasons and programs and events, some events that the TNT NYC Chapter embarked on for the first time (Ironman NYC, and the Bermuda marathon weekend, for example), worked with super dedicated people and all sorts of teams and ridiculously fabulous coaches, and helped take some more steps in the fight against blood cancers with truly amazing and inspiring people.

And now: another adventure that I am quite excited about. I accepted a position at Autism Speaks. I am still in the non-profit, and endurance sports and fundraising realm but it’s a very different endeavor!

They also have a fundraising endurance program where people fundraise and participate in walks, halfs, full marathons, etc, but they’re creating a series of new endurance challenges and I’ll be helping out with that! Basically, we’ll be creating 5Ks, 8Ks, and 10Ks, on a national level. Plus, they have other events (rappelling from buildings, etc) that I find very interesting and want to work on! It’ll be quite creative and hands on, just like I like! I am uber-excited!

I am officially starting next week, right after my NYC Half, but this week they are sending me to the Run Walk Ride Conference in Atlanta, where I will get to meet most of the people I’ll be working with and learn a lot. Wish me Luck!

And FYI, before you ask, this still has nothing to do with my Letting Go post from last week 😉 You’ll hear about that soon too!

Original post with comments is here

My first HASH RUN! Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore!

After the Hot Dog Challenge FAIL on Saturday, my stomach was a mess all day. The next day, same thing, plus a headache. Yuk.

I decided to stay put and sleep it out, maybe I would not run Sunday… (as if!).
I checked on Helen’s 5K (which she KILLED with a massive 30 seconds PR at 18 and something) and she was like I am doing a Hash Run at 3 pm… It was around 1 pm and I was still iffy… But, nonetheless, at 2:40 I decided I HAD to go out. My stomach was completely empty though. Also, wtf is a hash run? As I had no idea, I wore my marathon shoes… just in case!!
What did I know? Well, they run towards something, probably booze and you have to figure out which why to go on the run. That’s all.
But, I had no clue there’d be that many rules. Heck, even a different language!
So, we got there like 20 minutes late so we had to catch up to the group. Then there were chalk markings on the corners. Sometimes.
Some times they were arrows telling us where to go, sometimes it was a cross with a circle around it, which meant you had to check all directions, then come back and mark the course for the rest of the group. And make another mark in the arrow…
2013-03-03 16.15.57
So, there was a lot of waiting around and chit-chatting in corners, or retracing our steps sometimes.
It was a little confusing for me…
There was also a LOT of shouting, which I would have loved to do too only if I managed to get it straight. On On, means you’re on course. On Left, On Right, means turn here. If you scream Are you on? you’re asking someone if he knows where on earth we should be going… Lots of of screaming, and passing the word back…
Most of them had a shirt that said something about a hash club. Or about ON ON, or about Beer… Two colored socks were the thing in the group. Note to self!
2013-03-03 16.12.08
As you can see, eventually, we ended up in the park… and there was like some middle of the run meetup situation (I am sure it had a particular name), where people refueled on beer. I stayed very far away…!
Note I am still on an empty stomach and 4:30 pm, with an hour and half of hashing…
2013-03-03 16.20.51
Helen celebrating her 5K VICTORY (well, I call it that!)
2013-03-03 16.17.36
After that refueling, you picked the chicken or eagle…
If you know me at all, you know I am no chicken, and Helen is always three stephs ahead of me! It was tough though… I was starting to get hungry, lightheaded, tired…  and we got on the trails…
IMG_9064
It turns out, you can’t make markings on the floor, so they used trees, so we really had to keep looking all over the place. Trees mostly, see?
IMG_9065
And then… we got to the craziest part. I had to climb… I hate hate hate heights. So, somehow, I did it. And by somehow I mean crying, whining, panicking, and b!tching!

Soon we were on the west side, through Columbia University, and into Morningside Heights!

On In =  you made it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Six or seven miles in like over 2 hours through who knows were! HA. That’s what I call an adventure!
Check out the map, lots of back and forth and know knows where we are!
map
And then, when I thought the fun was over.. wow, I had no idea.
So, it looks a little cultish but it’s fun. there was a LOT of singing, for any reason, and they all knew the songs. So, they’d christen the “virgins”, like me. Call you “racist” if you were any race’s gear…
IMG_9077 IMG_9076
It was just water, don’t get excited… whatever you don’t drink, goes on top of your head or something. I obviously swallowed even the ice cubes! Luckily, no hot dogs!!!!
Helen had to drink because she had raced that day or something… I can’t remember what it was…
Everybody had to do a shot for one reason or another. And there were pitchers of beers all over the place!!
Pizza was there two seconds later and all of a sudden, at 7 pm, I was starting to feel A LOT better!
Anyway, they’re a colorful bunch!! Such a different type of run, you learn a new language, you don’t have a clue where you’ll end up, you’ll see parts of the city you might have never seen, and you meet all these people that run and think it’s fun. They’re just running towards the booze though. I might have to make sure I eat before next time and who knows…!!

NY Rogue Runner’s Hot Dog Challenge Report: Don’t bite off more than you can chew…

(sorry if you’re eating while reading this. Or, actually, don’t eat while reading this)

If you know me at all you know I like to run, AND I like to eat.
So, when my friend Baker reached out on Friday to tell me they didn’t have any female competitors in the Hot Dog Challenge, I almost instantly said yes.
Note 1: Baker is one of my amazing friends (though ALL my friends are amazing!) who is also one of my favorite runners. He’s done it all and always in the most chill way, which is really not normal for a fastrunner/ironman/etc.
Note 2: So, Baker and some friends are the New York Rogue Runners, they put up insane challenges/runs/etc that might not be all about speed races… which is the type of fun I like besides running.
Note 3: The Hot Dog Challenge… pffff. It’s a crazy “race” where you run through the park and midtwon, around 5 miles and you eat TEN hotdogs. The official map and rules are all here; basically: all or no toppings allowed, no puking, all of the dog and bun must be eaten before you keep moving, and you get assigned a referee who will check on all of this.
Well, so I said yes Friday morning (race was Saturday at noon) pending long run time. Blaise hadn’t confimed yet what time we were doing our ten miler, which was going to be at Half Marathon pace plus + 10 seconds. By lunch Blaise confirmed we’d do it earlier, which I thought would build my appetite for the Hot Dog Challenge at noon. Then on Friday we had ramen noodles for lunch, and I added a pork bun, so lots of salt and fat, and by 3 pm I started to feel like crap! Then, I met my other friend for dinner and decided to take it easy: frittata. Ha.
When Blaise and I met for the 10, I thought I’d kill it. I was so ready mentally. HA. Really HA. I was slow, heavy and felt like I didn’t even have ten in me (though I love how every run always still surprises me!). Luckily, Blaise felt the same way so we plodded along and got exactly 10 miles at 8:15 average in the trails. Not so lame but not really what I wanted. Well. Whateeever.
I had 1 hour to kill before the noon Hot Dog Challenge… I was hungry, but what do you eat between 10 miles and 10 hotdogs? Yeah, nutella. Had a few spoonfuls, that I thought would rev up my metabolism… Riiiiight?
Hot Dog Challenge Start!
I made it to the park and I was already freezing (might have been really tired too). Baker gave us maps, read the instructions, assigned referees (Yo Rachel!).

All six competitors and the race director (Baker)!
2013-03-02 12.15.39
All I was the only woman competing, so provided I ate all ten dogs, didn’t puke and finished, I’d split the total cash prize (of $350) with the male winner. Best shot at winning a race EVER!!!!
I got a bit scared in the last hour, I am not gonna lie… I can eat a LOT, and a LOT of MEAT, but the buns scared me… also the speed at which I’d have to eat it. I can eat a lot but it’s because I eat slow… I got a bit stressed for a second and started plotting strategies, I’d sprint right out, get to the cart first so I can order first, and would have few seconds advantage. Once you have that advantage, it’d carry through to the next carts… right?
Hot Dog Challenge is ON!
We decided we’d START at a cart with a hotdog. Pffff. My strategy was out the window!
Five boys and me. I was sure they could all chow down faster and yes, I was the last one to finish DOG NUMBER ONE and leave. Frustrated already.
I get moving, and 10 seconds later, I am running at 7 pace and telling Rachel, my referee, I feel great, I don’t even feel this dog on!

2013-03-02 12.22.37

Well, 3 minutes later it reached my stomach or something, but I had passed two of the other 5 contestants during the run part!!!! I spot Neal up ahead, cause he had a super bright yellow shirt, and I figured I wouldn’t catch him before the 2nd cart but I wanted to stay with him.
We get to the 2nd cart, in the 7th Circle of Hell, and I am 4th, behind Neal. Those dogs were NASTY. GROSS. And we’d have to eat 3 dogs in the next 3 blocks…

2013-03-02 12.27.46
I got FRUSTRATED… my eating was SO slow, I swallowed the rest of it whole.
Thinking it was down, I started walking towards the corner.
I can’t. I can’t breathe. It’s STUCK. The stoooooopid thing would not go up or down.
I chug the water. Nothing. I try to swallow it, over and over, nothing.
I had no idea what to do, and couldn’t even look up for help. I remember raising my hand up like I can’t breathe.
I didn’t want to puke and get disqualified, but I had no idea what else to do. I started feeling dizzy and like I was sick and panicky.
Next thing I know, I am on my knees and hands, in the middle of Columbus Circle, and there’s half hot dog, with bun and all, standing up and tall in the sidewalk. Mocking me. I had not chewed it AT ALL. The untouched half of a dog+bread+mustard is sitting up there straight, looking up at me like I was a loser. I certainly felt like one, and he knew it.
Who can here say a wiener mocked them and made them feel like a loser? This girl!
I was FURIOUS.
I was also shaking and dizzy.
Right then, an old lady scolds me for leaving that thing there. I had no idea what to say or what she was talking about, I was bit out of it, heart racing and all.
I love NYC. I love that everyone will just come and tell you how they feel. I still walked away from her in a daze.
Anyway, I was out, furious for three seconds, and decided in the spot I’d referee just to keep going, what else would I do if not? I was sent to guide Neal, as he was alone.
Neal was a trooper, he had done this thing last year so he knew what he was up against. I have to say he smiled through the whole thing, even though I was feeling bad for him.
2013-03-02 12.49.12
Neal with the Ritz behind him, AND in front too! 😉
He smiled, he ate at his pace, he chatted with people, and he seemed fine, almost like he was enjoying it, even though he was different shade of gray with every dog… I navigated, tried to spot the hotdog stands and shoved people away from the sidewalks.
Everyone was curious though, we had race bibs on, maps and eating dogs… we got all sorts of questions and comments.
When we got to the 3rd card on Columbus, two carts after “my incident”, the people there were commenting that “Elizabeth was throwing up”. Well, that’s ME ladies and gentleman, I had to announce to my audience. I was instantly famous this weekend in Columbus Circle, by name and all. Can Meb or Kara say that?!??!
While running with Neal though, I was feeling like crap. I am not sure if it was the 1.5 dogs I had in me, or the throwing up that made my stomach a mess. I felt the whole burn, acid throwing up thing, but my tummy, who is always a champ, was not happy… I started feeling very happy with myself for not putting all those other doggies in there… What a wimp, right?
So, we run the last miles on Fifth Avenue, JUST like the Fifth Avenue Mile, same thing, and we met with everyone else there… I was the only female, the only non-finisher so I felt like a big loser, but I really had no idea what I was doing and was overeager… which means.. I will claim my REDEMPTION next year!!!! I will definitely make a point to chew my food. Not that complicated, right?
208544_423609404395724_199781877_n
Everybody else did great and they all finished. We then all went to a bar, where they all had some beers, got medals, I had some fries, and then I proceeded home to whine and call myself a wimp for the whole day.

NYC HALF in 16 days: is time to freak out yet? (plus a few more questions)

Well, TOO late!

I saw Peter’s newswire on RW, which made it all a bit more real
I totally think my name is Ritz all the time…
Ah, okaaaay.
Why is it I always start getting nervous before a half or a full with just 3 weeks to go and putz around the 3 months before?? (does this happen to you?)
I then, do all the speedwork I can fit in two weeks and relax and go super calm into the last two weeks. (you do this too, riiiiight?)
It seems to work though, because that’s when you’re peaking and want to miximize your workouts’ efficiency and let go of pressure/intensity/mileage for a mini taper. No need for long training period, nor long tapers…!
I will definitely do some mini-speedwork that week, which always seems to help finding the perfect yet elusive muscle tension… and then… the race… which will be osom. I am sure already. There are two reasons:
First
Lots of my favorite runners will be there. Yes, even the other Ritz. And Lagat is debuting at the half. Kip! Kip is racing a Half!
This is like when The Police got together for a tour or better.
Seriously ridiculous field. Do you realize how this is one of the few sports (or THE only one, but haven’t thought of ALL sports!) where WE do exactly the SAME thing THEY do, just a few steps behind? We’re on the same course (field, etc.) at the same time… When does it happen that you get to “compete” (aha, compete, I said it!) with the top crop of the sport? HA?
Second
I am gonna PR.
Yes. I said it.
Outloud.
In front of everyone.
Maybe I am jinxing myself but whatever.
I see the PR this far away.
Hopefully it’ll be a super-happy, in-your-face-old-PR, by at least 2 minutes, and my first sub 1:40 (YES, I AM EVEN VOLUNTEERING A GOAL TIME!), super strong, bopping, jumping, highfiving, smiling, city-touring, negative-split PR.
Otherwise, I’ll still take a regular PR happily.
I am gonna PR. Watch me.
(I better PR now, dayum, what did I just do?)

Letting Go

We all have goals and dreams and things to run to. But we are often stuck with something that is holding us back.

Even if our goal is more important. Even if we are super motivated. Even if we are running forward at full speed; there might still be something attached to our leg, or very tight in the palm of our hand.

I am fearless with a lot of things. My biggest talent is to move forward, but, just like anyone, I have things that scare me and I might not even want to acknowledge. And if I don’t face them, they’re there forever.

I saw this today in my facebook feed:

I realized there are a couple of things that still scare me. And that I can’t be myself fully if I don’t face them.

I’ve gone through so many walls, I never really wanted to break all my insecurities/weaknesses/vulnerabilities. I was keeping some things still safe in there.

I am ok, I really like myself and my life, but why keep one foot on the ground? I am closing my eyes, and jumping head on.

Millrose Games 2013: rain of records!

Howdy everybody!!!

I’ve been a bit busy lately but I didn’t want a long time to go by without sharing my experience at Millrose this past weekend.

Sidebar: in case you’re not familiar with Millrose Games:

The Millrose Games is an annual indoor athletics meet (track and field) held on the first Friday in February in New York City. They started taking place at the Armory inWashington Heights in 2012, after having taken place in Madison Square Garden from 1914 to 2011.[1] The games were started when employees of the New York City branch of Wanamaker’s department store formed the Millrose Track Club to hold a meet. The featured event is the Wanamaker Mile. (more here)

I’ve been going to Millrose, since I remember liking track and living in NYC. Here is my post from last year, when EVERYBODY was there. Having had the whirlwind-iest last two weeks that I had, I didn’t even check who’d be running. So lame of me… surprise me Millrose. I knew Centro and Lagat would be there and that was enough for me!

Did a great run that day to get inspired, and even watched Saint Ralph, one of my favorite running movies. You gotta get in the mood, right? I then got this breakfast of champions:

2013-02-16 14.11.50

It was Valentine’s Week after all!

We barely made it there for the Opening Ceremonies, and as usual, I never made it to my seat… I like hanging out by the track and located my friend Sid and his wife who are such amazing runners and friends and hang out, just like last year. Sid remembers every single runner and world record, ever, so that makes my work a lot easier.

2013-02-16 18.53.30 2013-02-16 18.51.35

(Shoe-Box) Opening Ceremonies. Bright tops really do make a difference, see?

A hot second after they were sprinting and we were screaming. It was just so intense the whole night went by in a minute, even if it was 3.5 hours and we were standing. I just never let down. I did walk off to the media section for a bit and got to chat with Peter Gambaccini. If you read anything running related, you know him. He writes all the amazing RW.com’s news and knows EVERYTHING. I met him last year and when someone introduced him to me I screamed like I had just met Justin Bieber. Yes, he’s that amazing! I’d say, bookmark him.

But back to the action… we were right on the track. I love putting my hands on the track (ok, just the tips of my fingers or the guy with the flag would come my way) when the runners go by. Such… force! You really feel it there… it’s quite breathtaking. Mostly when you know that you’ll never ever get to do the speeds they do!

Look how close:

Going back to the crazy week I had and not being ready for the event… I then hear Nick Symmonds is racing next.. WHAT?!?!?!??! Seriously. WHAT? I had never seen Nick racing. I am gonna admit the unadmittable: I’ve always had a *bit* of a crush on Nick Symmonds. Well, you all saw my previous post where I screamed about him. Well, Nick RUN.

2013-02-16 20.52.44

Ah.

Nick’s race is the 800 usually but here he run the 600m. He came in fourth, in 1:16:89, a bit over a second from Sowinski’s american record (for 9/100s of a second) of 1:15:61. Exciting race!

Then it was time for a very exciting 2 mile race. I like the longer races as it’s funner to watch the positioning and strategy 😉

Lagat threw down (and then fell on the floor after too!) to get the american record down to 8:09.72. Such a great race.

Hello Kip, remember me?

Then, soon enough, waaay too soon actually, the national anthem and the main event, the Wanamaker Mile. The women’s was fantastic, but I was really dying to see Centro and Lagat go head to head again, since the last time I saw them at the Fifth Ave Mile.

It was surreal. There is just something about this event, and how upclose you see them lap after lap, you can possibly even know what they’re thinking…

The thing is… they went out too fast (1:53) and that threw the option of a record out of contention… they all just went with the rabbit!!!

2013-02-16 21.58.12 2013-02-16 21.57.44

Too close to even get a picture… They are TOO fast (and I should have brough my camera instead of just my phone!!!)

Eventually Lomong and Centro sprint for the finish, while I held my heart in my hand, and Lomong beat him 3:51:21 to Centro’s 3:51:34. Did I mention in this post how much I enjoy watching Centro run? Just had to say it.

It was intense though. I was shaking for over an hour and I needed help getting out of the building. I am NOT kidding. I thought I was going to pass out.

Lomong, enjoying the victories!

2013-02-16 22.04.47

Lagat again, and his cute kid

2013-02-16 22.06.03 2013-02-16 22.06.12

And while I was bring transported out… you know what happened… I saw Nick Symmonds, I almost fainted while talked to me about stuff. And then I left, in shock or something. Post is here in case you missed my ridiculousness. Sharing again, just because I can’t stop.

Millrose Games 2013: rain of records!

Nick. Symmonds.

hi ladies… you know what I am talking about, right? Right?

Saturday I was at Millrose and I will tell you all about it later, it was super fun, but the oh moment, for came, came after the best of the best of the night, which is always the Wanamaker Mile. I get so tense I was in threads, shaking and spent after the mile, as if I had run it myself, There is this big thing between Centro and Lagat and it’s always amazing to see them compete. But like I said, there was a lot to see that night and after the mile I was a tense mess.

We decide I need to get out and get food. We say goodbye to all our friends and start heading out, when… I spot Nick Symmonds!! You know how I feel about Nick Symmonds right? If not, hello:

Nick and Nutella

And, of course, he’s a tremendous runner.

Anyway, I spot Nick. Juan suggests we go and say hi, there’s a door we walk through, though we shouldn’t have and two seconds later I am talking to Nick. Symmonds.

I have no idea what he was saying. Pretty pathetic of me to get stoooopid like that. I really had no clue. He was super sweet and telling me tons of things. Some things about races and the Armory and NYC… no clue. I wanted to die, I don’t get flustered like that a lot. Or ever. Seriously, this is NYC and there’s celebrities and runners all over the place; it’s an every day thing… But this was Nick Symmonds. I felt like and idiot so I headed out soon. Got a picture first of course, but please don’t laugh at how stoopid I look, though it totally represents me on that moment:

Nick and Me

I am quite happy that, after all this time, some things (runners!) still throw me off as violently as that.

__More on Millrose soon! I promise!
