Scott Jurek (in a NYC minute!)

Hi People!!!

(not sure why but I felt like shouting! ooops). All good??? Well, I will lower my voice and go into it then…

You know Scott Jurek, riiiiiight??? If you don’t.. well, seriously… WHERE have you been??? Just kidding, but do check him out.

Not only he’s an amazing ultrarunner, but I like him because he seems to be an amazing human being (or is he an amazing runner because he’s an amazing human being? Uh?? this theory keeps making more and more sense!).

I had seen his talks before, at the NYC Running show last year, at another presentation a bit before that but also got to run with him in Central Park, and also in the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt trails last year too, but whenever he shows up in town (he’ll be back in June 5, write it down!), I am in. He always has different material to share and great stories. And of course he can’t help himsef and be super inspiring all the time!

The talk was held at the new Soho REI store, which I hadn’t been to before, the place is ENORMOUS. Like, where I want to live enormous. The RSVP was limited to 45 people and it had sold out. Somehow, half the people did not show up. OKAY people, we know stuff happens, but I felt so bad for all the other people who couldn’t get in, I am booing some of you, yeah, so? You better have a good reason!

Because it was a small and cozy crowd (he said the word intimate a few times, yeah, we wish!) we got to pick the presentation/topics. So we blazed thru the two he had prepped, instead of just one: Inspiration/Psychological/how to get thru an ultra (or any other race!), and Nutrition, which.. if you know me, you know I would be napping in that one!

But it was totally fabo too. I took a few pictures of the complicated stuff that I knew I wouldn’t remember because I figured it’s share-worthy info, so here goes THAT:

Like? Makes sense? (ask him on FB if questions!). Well, he talked about training and a few things that work to keep you going on a race, I thought that stuff was excellent too, like…

– Injuries are our best teachers.

As much as this sucks (mostly if you are injured right now, you do NOT want to hear it) but it helps us work on strenghtening, in seeing what we have to work on, and what’s important for us. And why we love this running thing too. We always come back as better runners, right?

– Chop Wood. It’s from a Chinese proverb (but I used to be obsessed with buddishm so it made sense to me). When you are chopping wood, chop wood. When at a race, stay in the now. Focus on the moment, whether it’s your posture, your stride, your breath, your fueling, stay in the now.

– You have to want it. And remember why you want it.

– And… my favorite… this is what you came for. Let me know if you need me to explain that one. I LOVE IT.

He showed us a little video Clif Bars did, about why he enjoys running, with a lot of Caballo Blanco, you’d like it… I am sure you would. And his book Eat and Run is coming out on June 5th, apparently there are a few events for the promotion of the book, so stay on top of it!

PS: Scott is a GOD.

With some team-mates, I swear I am not that short, I was sitting in a table.

Well.. he IS really tall, like a giant almost.

Me vs ALL FOOD

Ray Bradbury is never wrong:

“I hate a Roman named Status Quo!” He said to me. “Stuff your eyes with wonder,” he said, “live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds.  See the world.  It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.  Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal.  And if there where it would be related to the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away.  To hell with that,” he said, ” shake the tree and knock the great sloth down on his ass.”

Seize the Day. The Week. The Race.

For the next two days I am going to seize as much food as possible.

There’s a half empty jar of Nutella on my desk now. I am starting at the top of my pyramid (pyramid explanation is here).

In tomorrow’s episode: a condensed milk can. Or two. Plus everything else.

…the Bachelorette…

What do you know? Every-single-time I go to this supermarket, it’s like I’m in an episode of The Bachelorette! I am really not sure what’s going on there, it’s just surreal, there’s not one time that I have been there that I wasn’t hit on. But it’s two blocks from my apartment, and the closest place where I can find some brands I like…

And it’s a tiny place too, not one of those mega markets, but I think because the space is so limited it invites people to get close and make small talk. I have 4 supermarkets within a 3 block radio. This never happens in the other ones!

I understand my basket contents could be screaming “look at me!”, but still… The guy behind me in the line for the register looked like his head was going to explode… Here’s the receipt:

And in case you can’t see it…
Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk PB
Nutella Hazelnut Spread 13oz
Nutella Hazelnut Spread 13oz
Nutella Hazelnut Spread 13oz
Bulgur Cracked Wheat
Bulgur Cracked Wheat
Quinoa

Is this even normal? Do people meet up while grocery shopping? Does what you’re shopping for make a difference? What if I needed TP (…Toilet paper, not trainig partner this time!…) or anything less glamorous?? What would be the regular supermarket pickup lines?
