Spectating the NYC Marathon is almost as intense as running it β but way more exhausting (and involves less snacks). If youβre sending friends or family out to cheer, strategy is everything.
Step 1: Plan the Perfect Route.
Place your spectators where you need them most. For those who know how to navigate the subway like locals, I suggest four prime cheer zones:
- Brooklyn (around mile): The energy here is electric β perfect for that early boost and not that crowded. Something like: 54th St, runner’s left or right.
- First Avenue, past 110th Street: (if you go to mile 5, you’ll have lots of time to take the Q or 4/5 to the UES and make to this stop) The crowds thin out here, which means your people will actually see you. Pick a street between 97th and 123rd, and probably runner’s left.
- Fifth Avenue (around Mile 22): When the going gets tough, a familiar face here can be magic. This is the toughest part of the course. If you picked 110th on First, just head over to Fifth Avenue and 110th! Runner’s left is easier but runner’s right is less crowded.
- Central Park Finish Line: The final reunion and the best photos! You can go to Central Park South and get a fabulous spot, but getting into the finish line is tougher. Your people wont see you cross the finish line, but could see you close enough if they purchase grandstand seating tickets. I like going to wait for people after they exit the park right off 5th avenue.
Step 2: Make Yourself Seen.
Your spectators wonβt spot you β youβll have to spot them! Have them pick a side of the street in advance and bring something big: a flag, a bright balloon, a ridiculous hat β anything you can see from 50 feet away through marathon haze. Extra points for colorful stuff.
Step 3: Gear Up for a Long Day.
Cheering is a marathon too! Comfy shoes, layers, snacks, and patience are essential. The day is long, but the energy is unbeatable.

I just want to point out my new gorgeous colorful adidas fleece set. It looks great but it fits a glove and you’ll forget your outdoors and not on your comfiest couch situation. Magical. Also, get a good adidas backpack and some very comfy adidas shoes under $100 for your spectating needs.
Bonus:Β Here is the most amazing toolΒ that estimates when and where your spectators can catch you β plus which subway stops are nearby. Share it with your crew and make a plan like a pro.
