Handana Review – and GIVEAWAY!

What’s a handana you say? Well, if you run (or do ANY other sports) and you sweat, as we ALL do, you probably need it. So many times I have said in a run “I am going to put a plug up my nose!!” that it’s ridiculous (well, I said tampon, but TMI, right?). My nose drips when I run, I don’t know why. It must be a common thing but just in case I checked with a doctor last year. Diagnosis: it’s no big deal. Ummm, I beg to differ mr “doctor“! In the Summer it’s not so bad, but in the winter I use my gloves, my sleeves, my jacket, everything!. I use them so much… emmm, TMI censure again!

Anyway, I need to wipe my nose constantly. I also sweat a lot… then I came across this:

http://www.myhandana.com/

Photo stolen from http://www.myhandana.com/

emmm, do I REALLY need ONE MORE THING to add to my insane running apparel collection? I don’t. I do. I got it. Loved it. I put the Handana on its own when it’s hot and over sleeves or gloves when it’s not. It’s not too tight or too lose (there’s a sizing chart which worked perfectly for me), and omg the difference is night and day! My nose is not peeled anymore when I get back from wiping it so much, and it dries in seconds so you can use it like 30 times a minute. I used it for forehead sweat a few times too, over the nose sweat and it was great, but my nose has never been the same anymore.

I thought it’d bother me but I would forget it was there. If you sweat a lot, and a headband doesn’t do it, or if your nose drips like mine, you might have to try it. Also, while you’re at it,

Also checking the site,  I came across the story on how the handana was born… Handana® was created by Katie Niemeyer as a solution to inefficient cotton sports wristbands she wrapped around her hands to wipe away sweat and nasal drip while running.  As a Stevens-Johnson SJS survivor, her eyes were very sensitive, and she found it difficult to focus on training for her first marathon while sweat was dripping into and burning her eyes. That’s when Handana was born. The picture on that link will give you a CLEAR idea of why she needed it!!

And we’re doing a giveaway for a gift certificate for $10 towards your own Handana!

Every One of this counts as an entry, do as many as you’d like.

  • Post below in the Comments why you’d like a Handana.
  • Share on twitter a link to this review, and tell us why you want a #Handana.
  • Post on your Facebook a link to the review, and tell us why you want a #Handana. A picture of why you’d like it (maybe a sign?? hint hint) would be fun!
  • Post on Instagram a link to the review, and tell us why you want a #Handana! A picture of why you’d like it, or something sweaty, or whatever pic you think would work, would be great!

We’ll track the entries by the link to this post and the hashtag. You have until December 20 to play, and then the great people at Handana will randomly select a winner, and we’ll announce it all over the place! Good Luck!

Congrats “Chris“!!!!! Please email me your choice of prize (from the post), postal address, and name and will ship it TODAY!! And no worries y’all losers, I am surely doing a race in two weeks, so you’ll have another go!

Guess my Finish Time at the 2013 New York City Marathon, and WIN a prize!

Just like we did before my last marathon and half marathon, it’s time to place your bets again… There is always someone who hits it right in the head! (always unbelievable! look the one I did three weeks ago! guesses here, winner here)

Rules: pick a finish time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! All guesses have to be in this post. Make sure if you include seconds in there too (like so: 3:11:22, ha), and post before next Saturday at 9 pm EST.

As usual, there’s gonna be PRIZES… you can pick from:

  • a biomechanics session (in NYC)
  • a clip-on running metronome
  • a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
  • a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
  • a Garmin FR70 watch
  • SLS3 Compression race sleeves, white, S/M
  • Craft Compression socks, white, M
  • Zensah Compression socks, black M
  • Injinji socks, Lightweight ultra thin performance, mini crew, gray, M
  • TCKSports socks, Topo and Talus, grayishs, size M

Ok, the data…

Last Marathons:

  • Berlin, September 2012, 3:27:44.
  • National Marathon, March 2011: 3:37:53.
  • Before that, most marathons I did were 3:42, 3:45, 3:45, 3:51 (my first one).

I haven’t done a marathon since September last year, so all I have is one race, a half marathon early October, where I did 1:43:33.

Running Calculators!

My guess: I am sure I will NOT PR. Not only I am not in good shape, but I stopped running for most of July and August because of an ulcer. Then I fell and that killed my only long run this year (since last year’s Berlin marathon, I haven’t run over 14 miles once!!). I tried to do some more running, and now I have some weird muscle thing I haven’t figured out yet… I am not even sure I can run it but I will definitely try! If I make it to the start I’d like to get a course PR, which would be sub 3:42:33. That’d be my goal.

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can pick it up when you’re in NYC if you are abroad! Or have me send it to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted here (not on facebook, not on runnersworld.com, HERE) before Saturday 8 pm.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

Who Will Win a Prize??? Guess my Finish Time at the Grete’s Gallop 13.1 this Sunday!

Just like we did before my last marathon and half marathon, it’s time to place your bets again… Some of you like to get really close, just seconds away! I think this time will be super close.

Rules: pick a time and write in the comments below. Whoever gets closer, wins, If there’s two identical times, the first poster wins! Make sure if you include seconds in there too, and post before next Saturday 7 am. There’s gonna be prizes… you can pick from:
– a biomechanics session (in NYC)
– a clip-on running metronome
– a  brooks flat vapur water bottle
– a NYC Marathon rain (knee-length, orange and white) poncho
– Knuckle lights
Ok, the data…

My Half PR: NYC Half, March: 1:37:35 Pace: 7:27
Last Half: Brooklyn Half Marathon: May: 1:38:29

My guess: I am sure I will NOT PR. Not only I am not in good shape, but I stopped running for most of July and August because of an ulcer. I started running regularly 2 weeks ago and did 16 hilly miles last Saturday very slowly. I haven’t done any speed since July. Now that I can run, I am focusing on long and endurance and not on my speed. After all, the marathon is 32 days away!

Also, the Grete’s Great Gallop is not the fastest half: TWO loops of Central Park. enough said. 😉

GO ON! Place your bets below!!! (I will probably not look until after!) but I will add more prizes (after I hear back from my sponsors!)

Prizes shipped only within the US, but you can pick it up when you’re in NYC if you are abroad! Or have me send to someone in the US.  / Comments with guesses will only count if they are posted before Sunday 9 am, EST.  / If there are two guesses with the exact same time, the first one wins.

(August) Biomechanics Coaching Session GIVEAWAY

JULY’S GIVEAWAY RESULTS!!!

Wow, July’s giveaway was a hitttt!! Thanks all for participating!! As picked officially by rafflecopter here, the winner is… Kashi D!!

I know a few of you will be disappointed you didn’t win, so I am hosting another giveaway for August!! See below and participate!

———————

Nine out ten people I have coached were wrong when describing their running form. And if no one had video-taped them before, how could they possibly know?? Have you ever seen your running technique close up, frame by frame? No matter how fast or slow you are, there is always something you can do to perfect or injury-proof your running skills.

Not sure what you are doing, form-wise? Or why it sometimes hurt? You know you could run better, faster, or more efficiently? You know you could glide…? Have you been injured? You know you should change your form but not sure what or how?

I am here to help!! I am giving away a Biomechanics Coaching Session a month!

Why do you need a Biomechanics Coach?

Very simple! Running is a skill and it needs to be mastered to avoid injuries and become effortless.
Over 80% of runners get injured every year, and most injuries are caused by a lack of certain skills.
Master the skills of running and you will become an efficient and injury-proof runner!

There are many ways to enter, simply follow the super simple instructions in the Rafflecopter giveaway!

At the end of August, the widget will randomly generate a winner and we’ll announce it here. PS: one condition, we are meeting in Central Park for the session!

And, if you don’t want to wait or just have bad luck with raffles, email me and we can set up a 1×1 session.

Free Biomechanics Talk, don’t miss it

I’ve been invited to host another clinic, this time at the Park Slope JackRabbit Sports Store on July 23rd.

I’ll be going over all the data and science and biomechanics you can handle before you get bored. You’ll clearly see how it relates to your own running and learn what you can do to avoid injuries, get fast, and run smooth! Don’t miss it. I don’t do these often (for free!!).

JackRabbit Sports is located at 151 7th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215. A few blocks off Grand Army Plaza, the 2,3, and the R an F and G are around there too.

Facebook event is here, so RSVP there in case of updates. It’s an open and public event, so share and invite your friends too! Everyone can benefit from a little bit more info on form and efficiency!!

Plus, don’t forget to enter the giveaway for a free coaching session! See you there!!

Giveaway: customized Official NYRR ING New York City Marathon Online Training Program (or for a half marathon!)

I used this program twice already, for the 2011 Footlocker Five Boro Challenge NYC Marathon, and then this year for the NYC Half. You enter ALL your running information in there and it gives you a predicted finish time. You get a (weekly or daily) email with the  workouts and you have an online hub where everything is recorded, listed and explained. If, midway through the program, you run a race and want to adjust your times, you can do that! It’s really cool because you can customize with your personal history and data, but also with races and times that happen thru the training, and keep it realistic. Plus, it gave me workouts I had never tried before… It also predicted I’d run a 1:35, which I thought was ridiculous (my last halves had hovered around 1:42s); and, I did 1:35:37!! I definitely recommend it. Also, you get the support of all the NYRR coaches, so, why not?

For this giveaway, we have available a program for NYCM marathon OR any half marathon.

You have THREE chances to play and win:

– Post below a comment: what you will be training for starting July 15 and why you’d like to win it, and maybe what you think your training needs help with = 1 entry

– Follow me on twitter, comment below you did so and your username = 1 entry

– Follow this blog via email (bottom right in the bar there –> on the right), comment below you did so = 1 entry

Every entry counts, do all 3!!! The 16-weeks program starts Monday, July 15th., so on July 8th we’ll randomly select a  winner! Super easy, right? Go for it and, also, share!

And in case you want to keep reading about the Official NYRR ING New York City Marathon Online Training Program here is more info, and their website:

The Official ING New York City Marathon Training Program is unlike any other; it uses data you provide about your fitness level, race experience, and scheduling needs to generate a workout schedule that will prepare you to run your race. Input your age, gender, training history, race results, and schedule to start training like a pro for November 3, 2013. You’ll be able to set realistic goals, and your online program will adjust as your fitness changes.

Other marathon training plans are neither dynamic nor flexible, they don’t cater to your schedule, and they aren’t specific to the ING New York City Marathon course. Our program uses proprietary insights from the NYRR marathon-finisher database and unique knowledge of the NYC course to get you on track. Let our experts take you all the way to the Central Park finish line!

GiveAway!!! Have you seen these MilestonePods that track your mileage?

I found a neat new gadget that could be pretty useful: the MilestonePod. It tracks your mileage so you know when to change your shoes. Some of us are a bit… ehem, type-A, and use megaspreasheets to track miles on shoes or something else but this thing could make life very easy for people who don’t do that (you know who you are!!) or a nice inexpensive gift for any new runner, walker or triathlete.
You just keep it on your shoe and constantly tracks mileage. That’s all. And you’ll be able to know when it’s time to replace them. And, there is a little storage on the device so you can also load health or emergency information which will be with you at all times.
The MilestonePods are in production and ready to ship soon. More information here.
So, who wants one? They gave me five to give away!
Here is three different ways to participate in the giveaway. Feel free to doall three, and share it too!
– Post a comment below, telling me why you’d like one, or why you think it’s a great idea.
– Tweet this: Cool new device from Milestone http://www.milestonepod.com.  Makes tracking mileage on your shoes almost too easy @milestonepod and then post your tweeter username below in a comment telling me you tweeted. That would count as a second entry.
– Like the Milestone Facebook page and then Share the Page on your Status, and post a comment below that you did so (and name on FB), that could be a third entry!!
Share the love! Post this link in your twitter and facebook so other people can participate too, don’t be greedy! PS: disclaimer, as they are still in production, these will not ship until May and they’re only shipping within the US. You have until Tuesday to post/share/participate and we’ll pick the 5 winners then! Good luck!!!!
